Public and community libraries of the National Authority of Libraries and Information System (Nalis) across the country organized in-person holiday camps in July and August, focusing on the 60th anniversary of Independence.
In keeping with Nalis’ mandate to preserve, promote and utilize national heritage information and in an effort to encourage patriotism among those who participated, most of the activities were based on the rich history of Trinidad and Tobago, a media release said. .
Know your country quizzes, let’s think red, black and white, games we played and the Diamond Jubilee celebration were among the themed activities in the libraries. These took the form of bingo; lectures; arts and crafts; meetings with authors and storytelling sessions; fashion show; movie day; career day and karaoke with local songs, to name a few.
Arts and crafts sessions included making replicas of the national instrument and the national flower. Educational videos focused on national emblems and the history of the Independence Day. At the end, the kids were able to create a scroll/book of their favorite camp memories.
Nalis libraries continue to provide safe spaces for children and provide services to facilitate the cultural, social and educational development of the people of TT, the release said.
