Netball carnival promotes close ties

NETBALL: LIHIR International School in the Namatanai district of New Ireland province hosted the 2022 netball carnival.

This event promotes the close relationship between the school (LIS-Lihir International School) and the visiting school, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) of Kavieng.

The Netball Carnival was held earlier this month in the LIS school grounds. The initiative started in 2017 but had to be stopped in the last two years due to COVID-19.

There were primary, secondary and girls divisions with teams from both LIS and OLSH, all displaying great talent and morale.

The LIS Kumuls High School team were the winners of the high school division, with the LIS Primary team winning all but one of their games and the Lihir Ladies team winning all of their matches.

“The weekend wasn’t just about the winning team, it was about having fun and being active, and that’s what happened over the two days between the OLSH and LIS communities,” said LIS Deputy Director Catherine Langusch.

Each OLSH student received a participation medal for their active involvement in the competition.

OLSH teacher Wiki Thomas, who accompanied the OLSH girls, said during the post-carnival presentation ceremony that they were grateful for the opportunity to participate in the carnival.

She expressed her appreciation for the hospitality offered and said that they have enjoyed the competition a lot.

The schools are looking forward to facing each other at the 2023 netball carnival, except this time at the OLSH netball court in Kavieng.
