New Coquitlam carnival shares respect and inclusion for all cultures

World of Love saw thousands of locals brave the changing weather conditions to learn and try something new over the long Labor Day weekend.

After two years of waiting, organizers are basking in the success of a new festival in Coquitlam.

On Sunday and Monday (Sept. 5), the multicultural World of Love carnival flashed many bright colors around Town Center Park to celebrate the diversity of the Tri-Cities and Metro Vancouver regions.

Tens of thousands of visitors were treated to something new from another culture, including food, dance, music and activities for all ages.

Although there was heavy rain on the first day, getting on stage was a relief for Joanna Wu, who spearheaded the campaign to host the carnival through the North American Association for the Promotion of Chinese Culture.

“As the theme of this event indicates, all performers and visitors appeared in pursuit of World of Love and with respect for the multicultural diversity that represents the nature of Canada’s multiculturalism,” the organization said in a statement to Tri-City News.

Performances on the TD Community Plaza stage included music and dance from groups representing Argentina, China, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Peru, Scotland and Vietnam.

Also, several intricate lantern displays were placed along the trails near Lake Lafarge.

Dignitaries in attendance for the first multicultural World of Love Carnival included Coquitlam–Burke Mountain MLA Fin Donnelly, Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart, numerous city council members and BC Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training Anne Kang.
