On Tuesday, October 25, the Nicaraguan Parliament accepted the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Ileana Perez Lopez, who resigned last week.
The former judge is now leaving her post after being imprisoned and then released a few days ago.
Pérez López thus becomes the fourth top court judge to resign from her post since mass street protests in the Central American country against Daniel Ortega in 2018.
“I am writing to submit my resignation from the position of magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice due to health reasons and this requires attention, making the position available,” says her resignation letter, which until now has served as president of the Civil Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, after spending eight years in this body.
Local media assure that the persecution launched against the judge is due to internal struggles within the Nicaraguan government to control the court.
