DON’T LIVE WITHOUT WAR, by Almir Ghiaroni, fiction
In his fourth feature book, Almir Ghiaroni creates a cinematic thriller with social deviations.
Episodes of urban violence, militia actions and other social deviations typical of large metropolises make up the fascinating plot that unfolds against the backdrop of the city of Rio de Janeiro and its famous natural beauties. Writer and ophthalmologist Almir Ghiaroni launches the fourth book of his career, “You can’t live without a fight” (Gryphus Editora), which combines all these ingredients with one passion: jiu-jitsu. The departure will take place this Monday, 21/11, in Travessa do Leblon, starting at 18:00. Before that, at 5 p.m., a conversation will take place with the author and academic and professor Arnaldo Niskier, from the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL), with the mediation of journalist Ancelmo Góis. A police thriller develops from an everyday event – a robbery – seen by chance by the character Herculano Fagundes, from the window of the bus he was traveling on. At the time of the robbery, Patricia is helped by Herculano, a private driver from the Northeast who settled in Rio after a career in MMA, who protects her using his fighting skills. In the book, in quick words, the author conveys the personality of each of the characters, some of a very evil nature. Ghiaroni manages to expose family conflicts, in the case of Antonio Magalhães, a successful businessman in the city, and his family consisting of his wife Angelica and his only daughter Patricia, married and mother of two daughters. Almiri seeks to highlight moments of tension, suspense and in particular justice and friendship, feelings that are very present in his works. The fabric of the book is also composed of a characteristic poetic zeal of the author. In the course of the narrative, Ghiaroni leaves room for the redemption of one of the characters. For this, he uses one of the fields he passionately pursues, Kardecism, and its basic tenets, such as the importance of past lives and the fact that many coincidences may not be mere coincidences. Passionate about cinema, Almiri narrates the thriller through images, making their stories intertwine and the actions of some interfere in the lives of others, creating a chain of synchronicity, which has been a feature of the author since his first novel, Like the colors of life (2004). As for the title of his book “Without war there is no life”, whose expression appears repeatedly in the work always remembered by Herculano, Almiri says that it is a phrase said by one of his patients and that it has left an impact on to him. “Anyone who abandons the war will never be able to taste the taste of victory,” he concludes. The book has a foreword by the academic, writer and professor Arnaldo Niskier and introduction by the doctor Jorge Moll Filho. Ghiaroni has a large literary reference in his family. He is the grandson of the poet and journalist and editor Giuseppe Ghiaroni (1919/2008), who was also the editor of Rádio Nacional and the programs of comedian Chico Anysio, on TV Globo, for many years.
