Crown Heights will host the inaugural symposium of Caribbean dance, music and culture, according to MSN.
The symposium, which runs from December 2 to 4, will bring together practitioners of Caribbean culture from across the country to share information about the deep historical foundations of Caribbean activities.
A group of African dancers under the direction of Persephone Dacosta perform at the Crown Hill Theater at 750 Nostrand Avenue to kick off the event, which is then followed by a party and opening ceremony.
The symposium will also focus on the cultures and history of Haiti, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago through a number of seminars, workshops and panel discussions at the Medgar Evers College Preparatory School.
Among the various dance and music workshops are Ivorian drumming, Kompa, Trinidadian folk dance and Jamaican folk dance. The history of the steel pan, the development of picong, calypso and soca, as well as costume design and production, will all be covered in lectures and panels.
The inaugural year of what organizers hope will become an annual event. This symposium seems to have a lot to offer everyone.
