1897 – The first West Indies captain to win a Test match, Maurius Fernandes, was born in Georgetown. He played just two Tests but led the West Indies to a 289-run victory at Bourda in what turned out to be his last match.
1899 – Former West Indies player Benjamin Sealey was born in St Joseph, Trinidad. He played his only Test at the Oval in August 1933, but scored 1072 runs in the tournament with 19 wickets. Sealey averaged 29.37 in 51 first-class matches.
1923 – Former West Indies batsman John Holt was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He averaged 36.75 in 17 Tests and 41.33 at first-class level. Holt was given out LBW for 94 by umpire Perry Burke in his first Test innings at Sabina Park. Burke’s family were attacked by supporters.
1941 – Trinidad and Tobago Olympian Edwin Roberts is born in Belmont, Port-of-Spain. He won bronze in the 200m and was part of the bronze medal winning 4x400m team that competed in the 1964 Olympics. Roberts was part of the 4×400 yard relay team that set a world record 3:02.8 at the Commonwealth Games 1966 in Kingston, Jamaica.
1948 – Trinidad and Tobago Olympian Christopher Brathwaite is born. He participated in the 1976 and 1980 Olympics, where he reached the semifinals of the 100 meters and the quarterfinals of the 200 meters. Brathwaite won the sprint double at the national championships in 1978 and 1983. He was killed by a sniper in November 1984 while running in Eugene, Oregon.
1969 – Former West Indies opener Stuart Williams was born in Nevis. He averaged 24.14 in 31 Tests with a century and 32.36 in 57 ODIs. At first-class level, Williams scored 26 centuries taking 9517 runs at 40.67.
1976 – Former West Indies fast bowler Pedro Collins was born in Barbados. He claimed 106 wickets in 32 Tests and 39 wickets in 30 ODIs. At first-class level, Collins had 501 wickets at 26.01.
1991 – England beat the West Indies by five wickets to level the Test series 2-2. It was the last day of Test cricket for Jeffery Dujon, Malcolm Marshall and Viv Richards.
2012 – West Indies beat India by four wickets in Townsville, Australia in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. Ronsford Beaton took 3 for 33 to restrict India to 166 for 8. Anthony Alleyne’s 52 took the Windies to victory with 17 balls to spare.
2017 – The Trinidad and Tobago men’s hockey team lost 3-0 to the USA to finish 4th at the Pan American Cup tournament in Lancaster, USA. Argentina beat Canada 2-0 in the final. Trinidad and Tobago’s Tariq Marcano was named the Young Player of the Tournament.
