1942 – West Indies opening batsman Roy Fredericks was born in Guyana. His 169 against Australia in Perth remains one of the best knocks by a West Indian batsman in Test cricket. Fredericks scored 4334 runs in 59 Tests at 42.49, with eight centuries. A former sports minister of Guyana, Fredericks died in New York in September 2000.
1976 – Former Jamaica and West Indies opener Leon Garrick was born. He played a single Test against South Africa at Kingston in 2001 and three ODIs at an average of 33.00. Garrick played 57 first-class matches between 1996 and 2003, averaging 33.00 with six centuries.
1976 – Former footballer Barry Swift was born in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. He represented MLS side MetroStars in 1998 before playing for Maryland Mania in the A-League in 1999.
1978 – Former Trinidad and Tobago midfielder Leslie “Tiger” Fitzpatrick was born. Tiger played 33 times in national colors between 2004 and 2007 and also campaigned for professional soccer clubs in the USA and T&T.
1979 – Former T&T defender Marlon Rojas was born in Arima. Capped 23 times by Trinidad and Tobago, Rojas played professionally for the Atlanta Silverbacks, Real Salt Lake and for local pro clubs St Ann’s Rangers, Police FC and Joe Public.
1987 – Olympic sprinter Francis Adams died in Port-of-Spain of gunshot wounds. He competed in the 1976 Olympics as part of the 4x100m relay team that reached the semi-finals in Montreal. He also competed in the 100 meters at the Moscow Summer Games where he made it to the first round.
1988 – Trinidad and Tobago forward Kennya “Yaya” Cordner was born in Speyside, Tobago. One of the best forwards to represent T&T, Cordner has played professionally in the USA, Sweden, Norway and Paraguay.
1994 – Aaliyah Alleyne was born in Barbados. She made her debut for West Indies in November 2019 and has played 16 ODIs and 22 T20Is since then. Alleyne was part of the Barbados Royals women’s team that won the 2022 Women’s 6IXTY and was vice-captain in the subsequent Caribbean Women’s Premier League.
2016 – Former national football player Keith Aqui died. The former Howard University forward played club soccer for the Baltimore Comets, San Diego Sockers and local club Malvern. Aqui was inducted into the Howard University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996.
2018 – Australian batsman Alyssa Healey hits the second fastest fifty in women’s T20Is against Ireland at Providence Stadium, Guyana during the 2018 ICC T20 Women’s World Cup. She brought up her fifty from just 21 balls.
2021 – Hayley Matthews takes a career-best 4-21 to lead West Indies Women to a 37-run win against Pakistan in the second ODI in Karachi. The win gave the West Indies women’s team an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and their first win over Pakistan women in Pakistan since 2004.
