Malmesbury Carnival organizers have expressed their delight at the news that this year’s event has raised £30,000 for local good causes.
Thanks to the support of sponsors and performers who give up their time for free, each year the carnival raises thousands of pounds for charities and other organizations in Malmesbury and the surrounding area.
And the total raised at this year’s event, which made a serious comeback after a scaled-down carnival last year and a virtual one in 2020, has surprised even those in charge.
“We were definitely delighted,” said co-chairman Paul Overton.
“The money collected surprised us a little.
“We had a wonderful carnival and as a result, the money raised has reached this amazing total.
“The committee has been planning since October/November last year, so it was extremely rewarding.
“I think 2022 has been extremely successful and I think 2023 will be an even better event.”
Grant applications are open until 14 October via malmesburycarnival.co.uk and local organizations are actively encouraged to apply.
Grants should be for capital items, for example books for a school library, rather than paying salaries.
This year’s carnival saw the return of Petticoat Lane and Music in the Cloisters, with events held throughout August.
This culminated in the procession, which was held for the first time since 2019 in early September.

“I think people really wanted to see it happen,” Paul said.
“The atmosphere in the city that evening was electric.
“There was a great sense of enjoyment and fun.
“People were in such good spirits, both in the procession and in the audience.
“There was a very good sense of community.
“On behalf of the committee a big thank you to everyone in Malmesbury who contributed or came along.”
Paul also wanted to thank his fellow committee members who will begin planning for next year’s event in the coming weeks.
“Without them, carnivals can’t happen,” he said.
