Orionid meteor shower 2022: Peak expected tonight

Look up in the sky for meteors and fireballs: The Orionid meteor shower is expected to peak tonight, Space.com reports.

News direction: There is expected to be relatively little moonlight to prevent the detection of “spectacular displays of up to 80 meteors per hour,” the website notes.

  • This meteor shower is an annual event in late October, when Earth passes through meteoroids left behind by Halley’s comet, explains The New York Times.

For note: NASA said it is “considered to be one of the most beautiful showers of the year.”

How to see the Orionid meteor shower

What we’re looking at: The Orionids can be seen after midnight and until dawn, NASA said, offering the following meteor viewing tips:

  • Find an area far away from the city or street lights.
  • Bring a sleeping bag, blanket or lawn chair.
  • Lie on your back with your feet facing southeast if you’re in the northern hemisphere or northeast if you’re in the southern hemisphere and look up, taking in as much of the sky as possible, NASA said.
  • In less than 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adjust and you will begin to see meteors.
