Oshawa university professor named UNESCO Research Chair in Hate Studies

An Ontario Technical University global authority on hate crime and right-wing extremism in Canada has been named a France-based United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Research Chair in Hate Studies.

The appointment of Dr. UNESCO’s Barbara Perry says Oshawa University will continue to demonstrate its leadership in this area and also advance the purpose and mission of Ontario Tech’s Center on Hate, Prejudice and Extremism, which began operations in 2018. As chair of Research, Perry will develop evidence-based policy to minimize the incidence and impacts of hate crime and targeted hate speech, both online and offline.

“Hate crime arises as a means of protecting what appears to be under threat, whether status, wealth, privilege or territory, and manifests itself in various forms of hostility,” Perry explained. “Xenophobia, racism, homophobia, misogyny and other hate-related repetitions threaten the safety and well-being of targeted communities around the world.”

The movement also supports a wide range of issues and grievances, including but not limited to anti-government and anti-law enforcement sentiments. “Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in extremist ideas, movements and practices, including radicalisation, often with dire consequences.”

As chair of UNESCO, Perry will raise awareness of the various forms of hatred and hostility that affect communities globally, with the aim of developing anti-hate strategies specific to local needs, developing educational initiatives and promoting resilience and empowerment. of the community.

Her work spans diverse community policing, building resilience among marginalized communities, and broader issues of diversity and justice. She has helped advance the field of hate studies internationally, promoting global education and support for victims of hate-motivated violence.

She is a well-known expert sought after by broadcast and print media, including TVO, CBC, CTV, Globe and Mail and the New York Times, among others. She is a regular consultant with Justice Canada, Public Safety Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network and local social justice organizations.

The objectives and goals of the UNESCO Research Chair in Hate Studies include:

  • Community engagement and awareness through sharing research findings through publications, webinars and online modules.
  • Networking with international counter-hate and radicalization prevention partners, including institutions in Canada, the United States, South Africa, Guyana, the United Kingdom, India, Trinidad and Tobago, Spain and Ireland.
  • Promoting evidence-based policies, practices, and programming.
  • Training of students, postdoctoral fellows, academics, interns and the public.

UNESCO was established in 1945 just months after the end of World War II with a mission to contribute to global peace and security, to advance universal respect for justice, the rule of law and for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
