Pan Trinbago celebrates the historic debate on the Steelpan National Instrument Bill led by Minister Randall Mitchell

Port of Spain – The Trinbago Pan is delighted to join the nation in celebrating a historic and momentous occasion: the debate on the Bill intituled, “An Act to provide for the designation of the Steelpan as the National Musical Instrument of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago”. This debate, led by the Honorable Senator Randall Mitchell, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, is scheduled to take place in the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago today at 4:00 p.m.

President Beverley Ramsey-Moore, along with members of Central Executives, Regional Executives and Steelpan enthusiasts, will be in Parliament to witness this momentous event first hand. Pan Trinbago, the parent body of the Steelpan and the Trinidad and Tobago Steelband Movement, played a crucial role in advocating for the Steelpan to be declared the National Musical Instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. Today’s debate marks an important milestone in the organization’s journey and honors the legacy of innovation, creativity and resilience embedded in the beloved Steelpan.

Steelpan is more than an instrument; it is a symbol of national identity, a testament to rich heritage and a source of pride for all Trinbagonians. From his humble beginnings in the communities of Laventille and Port of Spain, Steelpan has evolved into a globally acclaimed musical prodigy, wowing audiences around the world with his unique sound and rhythmic versatility.

President Beverley Ramsey-Moore said: “On behalf of Pan Trinbago and the Trinidad and Tobago Steelband Movement, I express our heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago for this formal recognition of Steelpan as our national musical instrument. This historic step celebrates our rich cultural heritage and honors the legacy of all those who have contributed to Steelpan’s journey Bringing us all together We also thank every supporter, enthusiast and advocate who has played a role in this journey.

On Friday, June 7, 2024, Pan Trinbago marked an important milestone with the introduction of the National Musical Instrument Bill 2024 in Parliament. After today’s debate, the bill must secure approval from both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Once consent is obtained, it will be formally promulgated into law, designating the Steelpan as the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago.

As we celebrate this historic occasion, Pan Trinbago reaffirms its commitment to the preservation, promotion and advancement of Steelpan. We look forward to continuing our work with stakeholders, including our talented musicians, to inspire future generations and ensure that Steelpan remains a vibrant and integral part of our cultural landscape.
