Pan Trinbago is euphoric after receiving unanimous votes for the National Musical Instrument Bill 2024

Port of Spain – Pan Trinbago is euphoric following the successful debate on the bill entitled, “An Act to provide for the designation of the Steelpan as the National Musical Instrument of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago”. The Bill received the full support of Government and Opposition House of Representatives MPs present in the House of Commons chamber at the Red House, Port of Spain on 3 July 2024.

President Beverley Ramsey-Moore, along with members of Central Executives, Regional Executives, staff and Steelpan enthusiasts were present in the Public Gallery in the Lower House Chamber to witness this historic event.

According to President Beverley Ramsey-Moore, “Steelpan, a symbol of national identity and rich heritage, has evolved from its origins in Laventille and Port of Spain into a globally recognized musical wonder, instilling pride in all Trinbagonians. This evolution, shaped by the dedication and perseverance of its pioneers, has culminated in an important historical moment: the official recognition of the steelpan as the national musical instrument of Trinidad and Tobago by the government, leading efforts to achieve official and legal recognition of the steelpan as national instrument Leadership is extremely rewarding, Pan Trinbago has tirelessly championed this law, and witnessing the unifying influence of the steel pan is especially rewarding, as I always say, there is no off-season for the pan.

Pan Trinbago expresses heartfelt appreciation to the government and the opposition for honoring the cultural heritage of the Steelpan contributors, marking the occasion as a collective triumph that unites and inspires the nation.

Pan Trinbago is committed to preserving, promoting and advancing Steelpan, working with stakeholders and musicians to inspire future generations and ensure its lasting place in the cultural landscape.
