Astra Winchester Creations Pandemic has won the Plymouth J’Ouvert 2022. The results were announced on Sunday night by the Tobago Festivals Commission.
Eleven groups passed two judging points at the meeting place on Saturday morning.
Aneta Winchester also captured the Queen of the Band, Doubles and Singles titles.
Speaking to Guardian Media on Monday, Astra Winchester said she was delighted, “I feel very, very happy to know that this is my fourth win in a row. I am very proud of this achievement. It was a lot of hard work, but I know that hard work and dedication bring success. I experienced the COVID-19 pandemic. I got first-hand experience of what it was all about. I knew it would be a good theme and that I could do a lot with it. I told myself that one day I will portray the coronavirus as one of my themes and so, I decided to make it my presentation for Plymouth J’Ouvert 2022.
“From the beginning, my players told me that they liked my concept this year. Everyone kept telling me “I love it”, “Astra yuh is so good with that theme.” The players had a hard time deciding which section to play because they told me that the three sections I presented were too beautiful. When the results were announced, the players were calling me, congratulating me before I could share the news of my victory. They were all very happy to know that we did it again.

“My band will participate in the carnival in October with the same theme “Pandemic”. However, I will add section 3 which describes the countries affected by the coronavirus, eight countries were presented for Plymouth J’Ouvert. However, about 15 countries will be presented for the October carnival. Most likely the group will attend night mass and/or J’Ouvert.”
All three sections of the group included doctors and nurses who fought hard to save the lives of the infected. Deaths, those who died from the coronavirus and countries affected by the coronavirus.
Hundreds flocked to the seaside village for the celebrations. Bands, entertainers and people looking to break free after two years of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic took to the streets and followed the beat of the music truck along Arnos Vale Road. The event featured a taste of traditional Apache fiddle, mud, and masses.
First to take the stage before 5am was City Raw Jabs with their rendition of D On Told Story of the Saints which featured devils dressed in old motor oil and using a flambeaux to spit a ball of kerosene fire. Re Promotions’ presentation Apache Shades of Sunset was among the biggest groups. The Apache featured Chief Curry as King of the pack along with his queen Pocahontas.
John Arnold, CEO of the Tobago Festivals Commission, told Guardian Media that he was satisfied with the way the event was managed. However Arnold said he expected much larger groups to attend.
