The Central Bank of Peru (BCRP) said on Saturday that year-on-year inflation fell in August for the second consecutive month, reaching 8.4 percent, 34 basis points lower than in July.
The monthly rate was 0.67 percent in August, from 0.94 percent in July, mainly due to lower fluctuations in transportation and fuel prices, the BCRP said in a statement.
Fresh fish (21.3 percent), chicken (5.3 percent) and take-out (0.6 percent) contributed the most to inflation in August.
Prices also increased for corn (16.3 percent), citrus (6.6 percent), potatoes (6.4 percent), bread (3.3 percent), electricity (3 percent), higher education (1.3 percent), and rent (0.7 percent).
However, the price cuts that contributed the most to the reduction in inflation were domestic air transport (18.3 percent), motor fuels (7.5 percent) and root vegetables (7.4 percent).
Additionally, the index decreased for green beans (11.7 percent), papaya (9.6 percent), leaves or towels (6.1 percent), tomatoes (5.7 percent), other fresh fruits (4.5 percent), eggs (2.1 percent ) and international air transport (1.6 percent).
