Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. May 24, 2024 — Youth is on her side and positive energy propels her spirit. Twenty-three-year-old Phia Smith is a dedicated artist and performer honing her craft, delivering self-penned RnB, Pop and Soul songs to the world. She is preparing to share her gift with an audience in Trinidad and Tobago on May 29 at the Queen’s Hall in Port-of-Spain – something she says is an introduction she hopes will inspire other young artists to come out and to follow their dreams.
Phia has been under the shadow of bigger artists like Orlando Octave, who worked with her at PengCo Music, where producer, Randal Alexander has effectively shaped the young artist’s sound. “My sound is very unique and I like to think of it as a distinct sound, given that I’m not taking traditional Caribbean genres – soca, calypso, reggae or dancehall,” says Phia. She enjoys all genres of Caribbean music, but Phia says that ever since she can remember, she has been drawn to the soft international sounds of RnB, Soul and Pop sung by mainstream international artists. “I felt it was time to create a platform for myself, to present myself to those who will listen. I hope that the music authorities here in the Caribbean will now see the need to create spaces and opportunities for artists like myself who don’t necessarily sing traditional Caribbean genres.”
Phia’s ‘Purple Reign’ concert will double as an album release gig – with the artist explaining that her new album, and all the tracks on it, will be shared with her audience at Queen’s Hall on the evening of the show. “Royalty is the essence of my expression here, and I really hope that those who will come to the event will understand my overall effort to make them find their love for music again, fall in love with the lyrics that come from the heart – similar texts that almost everyone has experienced, or is likely to experience in their lifetime.”
The new artist’s album is called “Emotions Aside”. Next week on Wednesday – May 29, she will be performing alongside a live band, something she is looking forward to. “My goal is to show people here at home and internationally how much talent there is here in Trinidad and Tobago. We are so versatile, so creative, and I feel that everyone needs to hear and see what we have to offer the world.”
Other artists billed to grace the stage include Umi Marcano and Orlando Octave – both of whom have collaborated with the young singer in the past. “I am very excited to meet and share my love of music with everyone who will be at Queen’s Hall. This is something I’ve been waiting a long time to do and I really hope it encourages others who have been blessed with the gift of music to create their own spaces and opportunities,” said Phia.
