Port Coquitlam seniors’ carnival raises $1,500 for Ukrainian relief

The public was also invited to attend the biennial return of the Donald Trail Carnaval, which included a tank, a magician, live music and lots of games.

A retirement community in the Tri-Cities has proven once again that generosity can keep you young at heart.

Residents of Astoria and Mayfair Retirements (2245 Kelly Ave.), as well as the general public, were entertained during the facility’s Donald Trail Carnival earlier this month, which was canceled the past two years as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The July 13 event acted as a fundraiser and brought in $1,500 for the Ukraine Crisis Humanitarian Appeal.

This adds to a total of more than $2,000 recognized year to date, combining the other fundraisers Astoria has hosted at home for the Red Cross initiative.

In a notice sent to Tri-City Newsmost of the proceeds were from tank ticket sales, which gave visitors the chance to throw others into a pool of water, including Astoria general manager Naheed Walji.

The rest of the money came from throwing pies in people’s faces, food, drinks and the 50/50 draw.

The Ukraine Crisis Appeal is organized by the Canada-Ukraine Foundation (CUF) and the Canadian Ukrainian Congress.

It works with Ukrainian government ministries and ensures that incoming donations meet the immediate needs of displaced citizens.
