PREVIEW: Swim & Dive Hosts Tennessee Invitational

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Looking to compete against some of the top teams in the country, Tennessee Swimming and Diving will host the annual Tennessee Invitational this Thursday through Saturday at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.

Nine teams will go head-to-head at the Tennessee Invitational: Tennessee, Carson-Newman (swimming only), Duke (diving only), Florida Gulf Coast (women’s diving only), Georgia Southern (women’s diving only), Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina (dive only) and Virginia. The seventh-ranked Lady Vols meet will feature three nationally ranked teams with No. 1-ranked Virginia, No. 14 Michigan and No. 17 North Carolina, while the No. 13 Vols will face No. 9 of Virginia, No. 16 Michigan and No. 23 North Carolina.

Acceptance is free for all regular season meetings, and clean bag policy will be in place for all fans. Parking will be available in Lot SC40 off Kingston Pike near Tyson Park (PDF). Spectators may also meter park on Volunteer Blvd at available meters.

Fans can follow by streaming the meet on SEC Network+ or with live scores using the Meet Mobile app (NOTE: Preliminaries and finals will appear as separate meetings in the app). Watch Live Live can be found below with the daily schedule.

The invitational will be scored as dual meets (team vs. team basis) as opposed to an overall winner for the five swimming teams (Carson-Newman, Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia). All events will be run as preliminary/final events, with the following swimming exceptions as timed finals: all relays and the 1650 Freestyle. All 1,650 heats will swim in the morning except for the top eight swimmers. The finals will be played in B/A format. There may be C finals with postgraduates, but these will be mere exhibitions and will not count towards any points.

Because this works as multiple dual meets, each can advance a maximum of three swimmers to the A final. Only the top five from each pair of teams would score, and a B finalist could not score over an A finalist. Swimmers are limited to four point races. They can swim as much as they want, but they would need designated floats for exhibition. Exhibition swims may still swim at night, but will be relegated to the B final or below.

Swimmers can compete in all five relays. There is also a limit of four relays per event, as well, with the two best points scored per team (Relays A & B will compete in the A final, while relays C & D will swim in the B final). Double appointment rating will be used in this appointment (Individuals: 9-4-3-2-1/Relays: 11-4-2).

For diving, the top 12 competitors will compete in the finals for each event. Finals will immediately follow prelims. The evenings will also feature a non-scoring team event where multiple divers from each time will complete six dives (3 on 1 meter and 3 on 3 meters) in order to produce a team score.
