Efforts continue unabated to improve the level and quality of service provided to wards at the island’s only juvenile rehabilitation facility – the Boys’ Training Center (BTC).
To this end, BTC staff were recently completing a two-day training program in Modern Psychosocial Methods and Trauma, administered by staff from Harding University based in the United States.
Harding University is a private learning institution founded in 1924 with its main campus in Arkansas, USA. It is the largest University in Arkansas and is affiliated with the Church of Christ in St. Lucia.
Psychotherapist and professor at Harding University Todd Pattern notes that one of the goals of the Harding team is to serve communities and assist staff in managing conflict in ways that minimize unmanageable circumstances.

“We have an annual visit to Saint Lucia and we always make an effort to visit the Boys’ Training Centre. We are a church-affiliated group that always serves the community. We did that in this particular facility when Botham Jean, who attended Harding University, was alive, and so we intend to continue. Staff were trained in trauma resolution and psychosocial methods, while wards were engaged in sports activities,” Pattern noted.
Boys Training Center (BTC) Manager Wang Sonson expressed his satisfaction and appreciation for the recent training saying, “Any training offered to staff is welcome; however, this particular training is essential and most importantly, it comes from an international perspective. From that training I hope to see staff easily apply what they have learned. This will not only benefit the staff but will change the way boys are rehabilitated. We at BTC welcome all persons who show and are interested in the rehabilitation of BTC wards.”
