Queensland winter carnival on agenda for Incentivise’s unbeaten half-brother Argyle Lane

Incentivize may be spelled and out of action until the 2023 Autumn Carnival, but his sensitive history rolls through the works of his half-brother Argyle Lane.

Argyle Lane, the latest half-brother to the Australian racing superstar, made it three from three when he won at Ipswich on Wednesday and his trainer Josh King is already eyeing next year’s Queensland Winter Carnival.

Argyle Lane hasn’t won by the wide margins that his superstar sister often has, but he has continued the remarkable line of progeny from Steve Tregea’s former mare Miss Argyle, who died while foaling in 2020.

Lady Argyle produced nine horses, all of which went on to win races.

Toowoomba jockey Tregea, who produced Incentivize fame, who won three Group 1s last spring, including the Caulfield Cup, has passed the training baton to former rider King, who was Incentivise’s jockey on the track at one stage .

Five-year-old Argyle Lane had to dig deep at Ipswich on Wednesday to keep his unbeaten run intact, but King liked what he saw of the $1.85 favourite.

“He was a bit keen between the 1000(m) and 600(m) – the race taught him a bit because he had to fight on the line and really find what was probably the best thing for him, he didn’t do it. it’s easy,” King said.

“We’ll probably give him four to six weeks off and give him a bit of a break and then bring him back.

“We’re not going to rush him or hit him.

“We might look at him in a summer horse but we’ll more likely keep him for the Queensland Winter Carnival next year if he continues to improve.

“He’s very clean like Incentivize but that’s probably all he has in common, at some point in the future we’ll look at stepping him up to a mile.”

In nine years as a jockey, King rode 105 winners, including at off-track venues such as Tambo, Moranbah, Miles, Winton, Quilpie, Julia Creek and Surat.

Tregea recently handed over the reins of his Toowoomba stable to the King as Tregea took a step back to focus on his Windermere Stud breeding operation.
