Redemption The Return Concert Series

REGGAE MUSICIANS and artists have returned en masse to stages across the globe this year as the music industry restarts and recalibrates itself after the past two years of Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns. Here in Trinidad, we experienced two years without carnival celebrations and also none of the concerts or stage shows that we were used to attending every year.

The Redemption Concert experience began in 2014 and quickly became an annual fixture on the concert calendar, as Tropix Entertainment assembled stellar casts of both local and international reggae acts much to the delight of our reggae-loving population. The first venue used for the Redemption concert series was the Hasely Crawford Stadium Training Grounds. However, it quickly outgrew this venue and was moved to the Queen's Park Savannah, where this years' concert will be held on August 27 starting at 7 p.m. sharp.

“We know Savannah was named the Concert Capital many years ago,” said Redemption Comeback Concert spokesperson Seon Issac. And the name has been respected, being the most accessible, spacious, scenic and airy place in the capital. We want to welcome everyone out to celebrate the principles of reggae music at the epicenter of the world’s largest roundabout…’

Reggae is the music genre that revolutionized Jamaican music, but what is not widely known or claimed is that the reggae ‘sound’ was actually created by Trinbagonian musicians and spread throughout the Caribbean archipelago during the late 50’s and 60’s. The whole world knows that reggae music comes from rocksteady. What most people don’t know, however, is that although rocksteady started in Jamaica, it was started by a Trinbagonian. The creator of rocksteady is Nearlin ‘Lynn’ Taitt from Trinidad and Tobago.

When it emerged in the late 1960s, reggae music came as a cultural bombshell, not just for Jamaica, but for the entire world. Its slow, strange rhythm, its militant and spiritual lyrics, and the rebellious appearance of its singers have influenced all musical genres, cultures and societies around the world and contributed to the development of new countercultural movements, especially in Europe, in the USA. and throughout the continents of Africa and Asia.

Indeed, from the late 1960s, reggae music and culture took part in the birth of the skinhead movement in the UK. In the 1970s, he influenced Western punk rock/pop cultures, influencing artists such as Eric Clapton and The Clash. During the same decade, she inspired the first rappers in the US, creating hip-hop culture. Finally, since the late 1970s, it has also influenced singers of African origin, namely: Ivorian singers Alpha Blondy and Tiken Jah Fakoly and South African Lucky Dube who clearly illustrate this point.

Over the past decade and across its six editions, the Redemption Concert Series has featured many of reggae’s finest, rising and revered acts, including: Sizzla Kolanji, Beres Hammond, Jah Cure, Coco Tea, Anthony B, Morgan Heritage, Christopher Martin, Romain Virgo, Maxi Priest, Junior Kelly, Mikey Spice, Glen Washington and many more.

“True fans of the Redemption Concert will remember when Mikey Spice was overcome with emotion on stage during his performance,” remembers Issac, “When he saw the huge reaction from the crowd as he performed his huge hit ‘I Am, I Said’ and couldn’t. I believe he had so many fans here in Trinidad.’

“Beres Hammond has had many memorable moments as well and he is always in high demand. Although we try not to bring him up too often so people don’t tire of him, somehow every year when we ask customers who they want to see and hear, his name always comes up…’

The past two years have seen the lights go out for the Redemption Concert Series as concerns over Covid-19 prevailed across the globe and fans were forced to watch old videos online and digital memories on social media.
