BIOGRAPHY
Richard Clayderman, stage name of Philippe Pages, was born in Paris on December 28, 1953.
The encounter with music happened very early. His father, a piano teacher, prepared the basis for his son’s success and taught him to play this instrument from an early age; at age 6, Richard Clayderman read music better than his language. At the age of 12, he was admitted to the Conservatory of Music and, at 16, won his first competition, heralding a promising career as a classical pianist. However, to everyone’s surprise, he left classical studies aside and immersed himself in contemporary music. At this time, his father became very ill and could no longer help him financially. To survive, Clayderman began working as an accompanying musician. “I loved it and they paid well. That’s how I got away from classical music, although it gave me a solid foundation for what I do now.” He soon became in high demand as a backing musician, playing with big stars such as Michel Sardou, Thierry LeLuron and Johnny Halliday. When asked what his ambition was at the time, he would say: “I don’t really want to be a star, I’m happy as a backing musician and playing in bands.” However, his life changed fundamentally in 1976, when Olivier Toussaint, a well-known French record producer, and his partner, Paul de Senneville, owners of the Delphine label, heard him play. They were looking for a pianist to record the sweet ballad that Paul composed for his newborn daughter, Adeline, called “Ballade Pour Adeline.” At the age of 23, Philippe auditioned with 20 other candidates and, to his surprise, won. “We liked it immediately,” said Paul de Senneville. “His distinct and relaxed keyboard feel, combined with his reserved personality and attractive profile, impressed Olivier Toussaint and me. We decided to choose him immediately.” Philippe Pagès’ name was changed to Richard Clayderman (he adopted his grandmother’s surname to avoid misuse of his real name outside of France) and the single took off, selling 22 million copies in 38 countries. “When I signed him,” said Toussaint, “I said if we sold 10,000 singles that would be great, because it was the time of ‘disco music’ and we couldn’t bet more than that on a ballad.” become this big”. It was the beginning of an extraordinary success story.
Richard Clayderman’s distinctive style has earned him superstar status around the world. Today, he has recorded more than a thousand melodies and, according to a German journalist, “he was undoubtedly the one who made the piano the most popular worldwide since Beethoven.” Richard Clayderman has created his own style through repertoire that combines his trademark quality of classical and pop music. He set a world record for record sales, earning 274 gold records and 70 platinum records. Performances are his passion. “I like performing on stage,” he says, “because I have direct contact with my audience. In concert, with my musicians or with a symphony orchestra, I like to mix different tempos, rhythms and styles and provoke all kinds of emotions”.
Since 1978, Clayderman has traveled the world, taking his musical style to five continents. In 1987, he held his first concert in China, broadcast by Asiavision and with an audience of more than 600 million spectators. Over the next 15 months, he expanded his popularity in Asia, performing in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea and Taiwan. His travels also include Scandinavia, Greece, Sri Lanka, Malta, Germany, Hong Kong, Mexico, Turkey, Dominican Republic, Great Britain, France, Brazil, Indonesia and the former Soviet Union. Appreciated by millions, the “Prince of Romance” (as he was named by Nancy Reagan, former US First Lady and wife of former US President Ronald Reagan) has traveled the world as “The World’s Most Successful Pianist”. one of the biggest stars in the music world.
