The Banco do Brasil Cultural Center of Rio de Janeiro (CCBB RIO) hosts the Rio Mountain Festival 2022, from November 17 to 20. It will be the 17th edition of the event, bringing various activities that celebrate sport, culture and the mountain environment. After being absent from the festival circuit for several years, the festival returns to the screening of films, documentaries, photography, literature and talks with big names in mountain sports.
“More than an event, we present a lifestyle”, says Alexandre Diniz, Director of the Festival.
The Rio Mountain Festival 2022 program starts at 16:00 on Thursday, 17/11, with the photographic exhibition “Montanhas Noturnas”, by Marcos Terra, followed by film sessions at 17:00 and 19:00.
The Competitive Exhibition continues until Sunday, 11/20, with Brazilian and foreign films competing for the awards of Best Film, Best Brazilian Film and Best Cinematography. On Saturday, at 18:30, in cinema 2 we will have a lecture by Israel Coifman on his book “Mashallah – from the Arctic to Asia by bicycle”. The book is a mixture of a diary, adventure narrative, history and reflections on experiences lived in 19 countries: Denmark, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
On Sunday, we will have the speaker Rafael Duarte, who will talk about the book “Beyond dreams – from the bed to the top”, authored and co-authored by mountaineer Roman Romancini, who will also present a film of the same name at the Festival. Roman Romancini, one of the greatest climbers in Brazil, stars in the documentary about his life story after a serious bicycle accident, his recovery process and the conquest of a dream: Mount Everest, the highest mountain on the planet. For the same sport, the film Selvagem, starring Karina Oliani, features the first Brazilian woman to reach the summit of the world’s second highest mountain, K2.
The festival also shows films from other adventure sports such as Wing suitdirected and produced by Alberto Collantes, a Spanish film that overwhelms our senses with the pleasure of seeing Jonathan Trango fly!
And to enliven the festival even more, two ice climbers miss the summit by a few meters and make us reflect on the question of ego in the practice of sports. The film Egoland comes with a differential in its story, which escapes the classic ‘Hero’s Journey’ that we are used to in the cinema, but also in its production, as it is an animated film, directed and produced by Ignasi Lópes Fábregas.
The festival is curated by climbers Abelardo Walsh, Adhemar Sette, Alexandre Diniz, Jéssica Marinho and Pedro Lacaz Amaral.
Rio Mountain Festival 2022 also presents the 7th edition of the Mountains of the World photography competition. With an application deadline of October 30, the contest has a central character on the mountain and/or the sports practiced on the mountain. Amateur and professional photographers can send three to five photos to www.riomountainfestiva.com.br. The judges of the festival will choose two photographers from among the entries for the public to decide the grand winner who will exhibit at the 2023 edition of the festival.
“The return of the Festival of the Mountains of Rio has created great expectations among the public who have attended the festival for the past few years! I hope to contribute and encourage the production of national cinema and the practice of outdoor activities and sports.” comments Jessica Marinho, Festival Director.
