Road closures, travel and parking

Thousands of people are expected to pay their respects to Her Majesty the Queen over the coming days.

We are expected to see unprecedented demand for travel to London, particularly Westminster, over the bank holiday weekend.

Roads and public transport in and around central London will be very busy. London Underground and Rail services will be the best ways to get around central London.

Please plan trips ahead of time using real-time travel information to avoid delays and unexpected changes.

Ceremonial arrangements

Her Majesty The Queen’s Encampment at the Palace of Westminster opens to the public at 5pm on Wednesday 14 September. It will be open 24 hours a day until it closes at 6:30 on Monday, September 19.

Roads and road closures

Road closures will remain in place across Westminster throughout the weekend and until after Her Majesty The Queen’s State Funeral on Monday 19 September with disruption expected to continue into next week.

Further road closures will be in place from 4pm on Sunday 18 September which will significantly affect the south of the borough and drivers are strongly advised to avoid driving during this period. We also expect high demand on all types of public transport and would advise you to plan accordingly.

Temporary parking suspensions and restrictions will also be imposed.

Pedestrian access to certain areas in and around the ceremonial trail will also be restricted. We are working to minimize the impact on residents, businesses and local communities as much as possible.

Access to the emergency service will be maintained everywhere.

Please note that you may be required to move your vehicle or bicycle. Bikes can be dropped off, we will add information on how to pick them up in due course.

Resident parking

Due to the various road closures and restrictions that have been put in place to accommodate the Queen’s stateside period and the funeral itself, we are temporarily allowing affected zone A, D and G residence permit holders to park in bays residence in other countries. areas across Westminster.

This concession will run until 8:30am on Wednesday, September 21, 2022.

Bank holiday parking

Sunday parking checks will operate on Bank Holiday Monday 19 September.

London Trains and Underground

The Elizabeth Line will run a special service of 12 trains an hour on the central section, from Paddington to Abbey Wood, on Sunday 18 September to provide additional transport options for customers. The east and west sections will operate as normal. Further information is available through the TfL Journey Planner.

London Underground will operate as normal. Some stations will be busier than usual and some short-term security measures may be necessary, such as queuing, closures, non-stop trains or changes to the way customers enter or exit a station.

People are asked to avoid Green Park tube station if possible, due to the high number of customers passing through and to maintain capacity for customers requiring step-free access. Other tube stations, such as Victoria, Piccadilly Circus and St James’ Park, are a short walk from Green Park.

bus

Due to road closures, some bus services will be diverted or stop short of their destination and some may have a reduced service. Check the latest bus information from TfL.

BIKING

Cycle 3 is suspended between Duke of Wellington Place and Northumberland Avenue. Please follow the signed diversion. More information changes to cycle routes from TfL.
