PLANNING Minister Camille Robinson-Regis has said that the work of the inter-ministerial committee overseeing the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the Independence of this country was continuing.
Speaking to Newsday on Tuesday, she said, “I’m going to hold a press conference about it. We met and so on and we’re continuing.”
Asked about a budget for the festivities and more details of the planned events, Robinson-Regis said such details would be given at the press conference, the date of which has yet to be set.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a July 13 statement that a one-year celebration of TT’s diamond anniversary will be organized by a multi-ministerial working committee chaired by Robinson-Regis.
This commission included the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministries of Tourism, Culture and Arts; Youth Development and National Service; Sport and Community Development; and National Security; and Foreign Affairs and Caricom.
Trinidad and Tobago achieved its independence on August 31, 1962, with its 60th anniversary four weeks away.
However, the OPM’s statement on “plans for a year-long celebration” said it would include diplomatic events; cultural activities, competitions and caravans; youth-based activities; school competitions; community-based activities, events, contests; awards, dinners and ceremonies; television, radio and newspapers and nationwide exhibitions.
He also said, “Among the events being planned are the release of a national logo, commemorative 60th anniversary stamps and coins, national parades, gala concerts, as well as other sporting and cultural events designed to showcase multicultural, multiethnic and ethnic .the truly cosmopolitan nature of Trinidad and Tobago.
“Also, care has been taken to distribute these activities throughout TT”.
