MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The young midfielder AJ Rodriguez of the West Virginia University women’s soccer team has been named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
The honor marks the first of Rodriguez’s career and is WVU’s third Big 12 honor of the season. Additionally, Rodriguez becomes the first Mountaineer to earn the conference’s offensive honor since then Alina Stahl collected the weekly prize on March 29, 2021.
The Austin, Texas, native scored her first career shutout and led the Mountaineers to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory at Oklahoma on Oct. 23. In the final road game of the regular season, WVU fell behind, 2-0, early, but Rodriguez provided a much-needed spark, scoring back-to-back goals in the 38th and 73rd minutes to tie the score. West Virginia went on to earn a 3-2 comeback win over the Sooners.
Rodriguez’s two goals marked her first career double-goal performance as she now leads the team with five goals on the year. She became West Virginia’s second double-digit scorer this season, as well as the team’s 128th in program history.
West Virginia now returns to Morgantown to conclude regular season play, welcoming Kansas State to Dick Dlesk Football Stadium on Thursday, October 27. The game is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET, and is the team’s Senior Night as the Mountaineers celebrate the careers of five senior members of the squad.
