Roulien Boechat presents the exhibition “O Amargo do Açúcar”, where he brings characters from the luxurious cabarets and bars of Recôncavo Baiano of sugar mill owners, painted by the artist in the dark, using lighting technology.
The show, held by EntreArte, can be visited at Centro Cultural Correios RJ, from 12/01, curated by Carlos Bertão, and exhibition design and lighting by Alê Teixeira EntreArte presents the exhibition “O Amargo do Açúcar”, by Roulien Boechat, i who, in addition to being a self-taught plastic artist, is a photographer, historian, specializing in Brazilian and Art History and interior designer, which comes from the memories of his grandmother, the stories of Jorge Amado and Gilberto Freyre. , and the slave traders who earned their living in the paintings on canvas, in which he uses a mixed technique, such as bitumen, texture and water-based paint. One of the techniques that Roulien has learned and developed over the years, educating his vision, is to paint practically in half, that is, almost in the dark, with a yellow light wherever the reflected light comes from. Leaving the design faculty, he took a specialization course in lighting technology and studied warm and cool colors. This technique changes the viewer’s perception, causing the feeling that he is really designing an environment for the character. The inspiration for this exhibition came when Roulien did field research and became interested in the readings of Jorge Amado (‘No País do Carnaval’, among others) and Gilberto Freyre (‘Casa Grande e Senzala’). His grandmother was from Bahia, she came to Rio with two children, one of them her father, putting together the stories she heard from both, not only from the daily life of Recôncavo Baiano, but from real people. Many of her grandmother’s friends were white and said their mothers and grandmothers came from Portugal, brought by slave traders. On the same ship came Portuguese slave-traded orphans, although white, but living in orphanages and coming with the intention of ‘serving’ the plantation owner. These girls barely reached adulthood and already frequented the most luxurious places, as companions, because for the white man and the owner of the land they were beautiful and wealthy, unlike their wives, housewives. Young boys often came, also orphans, with feminine characteristics (according to the order) and presented as girls, all living in cabarets and luxurious bars. Hearing these stories from his grandmother greatly inspired the artist to write a book, which will be published soon, where this exhibition will be the prologue, where the characters from the paintings will be presented, which will serve as illustrations. The exhibition can be visited in Galleries I and II on the second floor, at Correios RJ Cultural Centersince December 1, 2022, with curated by Carlos Bertão, Exhibition design and lighting by Alê Teixeira and production by EntreArte Consultancy, until January 28, 2023.
