The Secretary of the Department of Public Safety (DSP), Alexis Torres, announced today that the Bureau of Emergency Medical Corps (NCEM) will recruit 12 state paramedics to appoint them permanently in the municipalities of Culebra and Vieques.
As part of the recruitment process, he explained, new doctors will be incentivized by a $1,250 increment, raising the base salary to $3,500. “A few weeks ago we started working on the action plan for Culebra and Vieques, we will recruit 12 paramedics permanently. In this way, we guarantee service 24 hours a day, seven days a week for all residents”.
Torres noted that he will implement the same paramedic recruitment process in Vieques. “Both mayors have referred candidates and we are reorganizing the recruitment process to immediately address the concerns of residents in both municipalities.
For his part, NCEM commissioner Javier Rodríguez Castillo and the mayor of Culebra, Edilberto Romero Llovet, agreed on what materializes the recruitment, reinforcing all the shifts.
“On long weekends and special events when we know there will be many people in Culebra, due to the visit of tourists, we assign state medical assistants to support the municipal staff. We will continue to work together with the mayor and we have agreed to assign additional paramedics to each shift to assist in first response operations,” said Rodríguez Castillo. He recalled that there are currently 210 paramedic positions available to the entire island at Empleos.pr.gov.
