The capital city of Port of Spain will be highlighted and celebrated today as Sekon Sta, son of the late great Calypsonian known as Merchant, (Dennis Franklyn), hosts his annual Sekon Sunday Party event in association with EEEmpire Events.
“Trinidad’s most innovative carnival party is back,” said a release from EEEmpire.
Dubbed “Fetecert” in 2020, Sekon Sunday is best described as a clever mix of Carnival party and Soca style concert. This edition will be held at the premises of Fatima from 16:00.
In 2023, Boxill looks to welcome carnival lovers of all ages and stages to the capital. ‘where Carnival was born’ in Port of Spain and says this event has been designed and will honor the late greats and birthplace of Carnival.
Sekon Sta, born Nesta Boxill, is the son of the late great calypsonian and songwriter The Merchant and as such, he’s no stranger to paying homage to calypso royalty.
Historically, Sekon Sunday has been home to iconic performances from Superblue, Blaxx, Winston ‘Gypsy’ Peters and The Mighty Lingo. This year, with the return of Trinidad’s Carnival, Boxill promises a similar cultural showcase that will remind us why we fell in love with Soca in the first place.
Boxill admits to being a fan of his show and often enjoys these acts as much as the patrons. This show will also be full of newer acts who are currently shaping the future of soca music and will introduce many of the young, bold and revolutionary artists of the new era.
Sekon Sta counterparts: Nailah Blackman, Erphaan Alves, Preedy and many more will be there to tell a part of the story. This generation of artists gathered around Sekon Sta for his installation at Queen’s Hall in Sekon Sunday in 2021 as we all braved the pandemic and still brought music to the people.
No stranger to innovation, EEEmpire has supported Sekon Sta’s journey for over 13 years and to this day they play an integral role in the production of his show. Ken Sambury of EEEmpire is a personal friend of Boxill as well as a co-director of EEEmpire. Thus, he is confident that the show that Sekon Sta is planning will give the audience the experience of a lifetime – worth the two-year wait for Carnival’s return.
“Beyond what’s happening on stage,” Sambury explained, “Sekon Sta has come up with a concept that expects every customer to be part of the story—from joining in the red and white style dress code to interacting and the reaction to the artists on stage and beyond. Red, white and black being our national colors remind us that we are the mecca of carnivals and fill us with the energy we need to celebrate our diversity and unity at the same time in capital.”
Sekon Sunday 2023 will boast an expanded bar complete with cashless payments and free KFC and VIP food. This show is supported by corporate sponsors such as White Oak, Vemco and NLCB.
Boxill said he continues to thank and commend corporate Trinidad for their involvement and hopes it will encourage more companies to get involved with culture and the arts to help boost our national pride and reap the rewards as a business and as the country.
