Souvenir booklets celebrate Ilminster Carnival centenary

TO CELEBRATE its 100th anniversary, Ilminster Carnival has produced a 48-page souvenir booklet looking back at the carnival’s history.

There are hundreds of pictures and articles from local carnival clubs and anyone interested can pick up your copy today from one of the following places: Ilminster Homeware, Café Square, Silver Street Dairy, Ilminster Library, Greenslade Taylor Hunt, Ilminster Hair & Beauty , and Ilminster Arts Centre. We are asking for a suggested donation of £1.

In each of the shops there are collection pots where you can make your donation.

At 18:30 on the day of the carnival (October 1) the sound of bells will fill the city.

A ringing of bells will be held in the Minster Church between 6.30pm and 7pm to mark the 100th anniversary of the carnival.

When the bells ring, be sure to hit the streets of Ilminster, ready for the procession to make its way through the town.

There will be various road closures on Saturday, October 1.

Boxstone Cross at the Bay Hill / Townsend junction will be closed from 2.30pm for the procession line up.

Kingstone at Bay Hill (inside) is closed from 2:30 p.m.
All other roads will be closed from 6pm (Bay Hill, Butts, East Street, Market Square, Silver Street, West Street, Station Road & Riec-Sur-Belon).

An official carnival car park will be available in the Doctor’s Surgery Car Park along Canal Street.

Car parking will be open from 4.30pm and will cost £4, with all money going back into running the carnival.

There are other public car parks throughout the city.

A spokesperson for the carnival said: “Please show your appreciation for the amazing entries to this year’s event by making a donation.

“There are many costs involved in running the carnival from road closures, insurance, health and safety equipment and much more.

“These costs have increased greatly over the past two years and your donations are needed more than ever.”
