The Sports Company of Trinidad (SportTT) says it is formalizing plans with Tourism Trinidad Limited (TTL) to develop Trinidad and Tobago as “the premier sports tourism destination in the English-speaking Caribbean.
A media release from SportTT on Monday said the two agencies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the National Aquatic Center in Balmain, Couva.
The statement said the plan will spur growth in both sectors and promote community and entrepreneurship development.
Furthermore, the agreement will formalize a distinct voice for SportTT and TTL in the promotion of sports tourism events at local, regional and international levels.
The announcement further added that the MoU will also optimize analytics to continuously monitor and improve the sports tourism message.
SportTT CEO Jason Williams noted that Trinidad and Tobago’s ability to stage big-ticket events is reflected in the events already staged in 2022.
“Already this year, we have had three major international tournaments, ICC Under19 cricket, Pan Am swimming and Davis Cup tennis. This shows the confidence placed in our ability to successfully plan and host what are effectively logistical giants. So as we continue to attract more attention, we need to ensure that the Trinidad brand is given a unified voice,” said Williams.
Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Trinidad Limited, Carla Cupid stated that there are obvious synergies between tourism and sports on which the MOU will be developed.
“What this MoU does is build an ecosystem that will ensure we can welcome athletes, their fans and supporters with ease. We look forward to strengthening our collaboration with SportTT in terms of destination branding, development of infrastructure and attracting visitors to sporting events that are themselves powerful tourism attractions while drawing global attention to Destination Trinidad,” said Cupid.
The press release states that the MOU comes at a time when state agencies are continuing formal and informal cross-internships and partnerships.
He added that the agreement also helps in the effective use of resources for the execution of sports tourism products and activations.
