Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash with a pedestrian that occurred in the New Castle area earlier this morning.
On October 8, 2022, at approximately 5:43 a.m., a black 2011 Toyota Camry was traveling northbound on South Dupont Freeway approaching exit #156 in New Castle. At the same time, a pedestrian was walking southbound on South Dupont Expressway and began to cross the road directly into the Camry’s path. As a result, the Toyota hit the pedestrian on the highway. The subject was then struck by a second vehicle, a black 2013 Cadillac XTS, which was traveling northbound behind the Camry.
Both vehicles stopped at the scene, which was dark and with limited street lighting. The pedestrian, a 74-year-old man from Wilmington, Delaware, was wearing dark clothing and did not appear to have a light or other means of illumination. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The identification of the victim is pending notification of the next of kin. Neither vehicle operator was injured, and both were properly restrained.
The road was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
