St Kitts and Nevis: The St Kitts Nevis National Carnival Committee (SKNNCC) will honor various carnival actors on Saturday, November 12, 2022. The Sugar Mas Awards (SMAs) originally scheduled to be held during the Sugar Mas 50 celebrations in 2021 were to was postponed due to technical and other limitations.
However, SKNNCC Chairperson Shannon Hawley has demonstrated her commitment by seeking the support of the new Minister of Carnival, Hon. Samal Duggins and other committee members to organize the Awards Ceremony for Sugar Mas 51.
The event is a formal affair and over fifty (50) people will walk the Red Carpet to be recognized in six (6) different categories.
These categories are:
The Gold Standard provides special recognition to an individual who has given meritorious service to the National Carnival consistently throughout his or her lifetime and at various levels.
The Poinciana recognizes and rewards those who took first place in a National Carnival event that exists or has existed for at least five (5) years.
The Royal Scepter recognizes National Carnival and Talented Teen Queens who achieved “firsts” in Regional or International Competitions.
The Steward of Carnaval is awarded to individuals and entities for continued exemplary assistance to the production and promotion of the National Carnival.
The Spirit of Carnival will be presented to individuals or entities that have demonstrated excellence, consistency and longevity in the growth and development of Carnival in various areas.
Sweet Strings will be awarded to groups for their excellence in music and promotion of the National Carnival.
The SMAs will also feature an In Memoriam Segment that will honor national carnival talents who have passed away recently.
In a Facebook post, SKNNCC stated “SMAs is truly a great initiative as it will give carnival lovers an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of those who have contributed consistently and significantly. There are so many to honored enough that SKNNCC will take about 3 – 5 years to honor all those who worked tirelessly in the aforementioned categories over a period of 51 years.There is no better time to start than NOW. We try to have SMAs every year and appear prominently in the National Carnival calendar”.
