Swami Vivekananda statue unveiled in Mexico, first in Latin America

Om Birla said that Vivekananda’s teachings have inspired people not only in India but across the world.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday unveiled Latin America’s first statue of Swami Vivekananda at a university in Mexico, according to an official statement.

Om Birla led an Indian parliamentary delegation to Mexico.

Unveiling the statue at the Autonomous University of the State of Hidalgo in Mexico, he said Vivekananda’s teachings and personality have inspired people not only in India but across the world, according to the Lok Sabha Secretariat statement.

He also referred to Vivekananda’s speech at the 1893 World Parliament of Religions in Chicago and said that he had beautifully displayed the characteristics of Indian culture in his speech.

In a series of posts later, Om Birla said, “Swami-ji’s message and teachings to humanity transcend geographical barriers and time. His message is for all humanity. Today, by unveiling his bust in Mexico, we are paying tribute our humble to him (sic).”

“Honored to unveil a statue of Swami Vivekananda in Mexico. This is the first statue of Swami-ji in Latin America. The statue will be a source of inspiration for people, especially the youth of the region, to strive and make a difference which will take their country to a new peak”, he said.
