For men, Jordan Crooks won SEC Swimmer of the Week, while Gui Caribbean took home SEC Contributor of the Week. It is the second time this season that two Vols have received their respective honors. Josephine Fuller is the first Lady Vol to be recognized this season, being named the SEC Women’s Swimmer of the Week.
Crooks, a sophomore from George Town, Cayman Islands, won both his individual events and both relays he was a part of to lead the Vols to an impressive 176-124 victory against Louisville. He posted season-best times in both individual events, winning the 50 free in a best of 19.35 and the 100 fly with a time of 46.04. His 100 fly time ranks second in the nation and leads the SEC, while he owns the third-best time nationally in the 50 free this season.
In the relay, Crooks swam the fastest leg of the 200 medley relay, which posted the fifth-best time in the nation at 1:25.66. As the anchor of the 400 free relay, Tennessee faced a deficit of more than a second and a half before Crooks dropped a 41.62 split to lift UT to victory in the event with a 2:54.64 mark.
Caribe, a freshman from Salvador, Brazil, went undefeated in the 100 free this season, significantly improved his 50 free time and was also a member of the top 200 medley relay. In the 100 free, he posted the fifth-fastest time in the nation at 42.81, which leads all NCAA freshmen. Taking second in the 50 free behind Crooks, Caribe’s time of 19.40 ranked fifth in the nation this year and was 0.82 seconds faster than his previous best mark in the event. He anchored the 200 medley relay lineup, throwing down an 18.87 split to take the win.
Fuller, a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, won all three of her individual events during the meet against Louisville. She swept the backstroke events with times of 53.35 in the 100 back and 1:56.45 in the 200 back. She also won the 200 IM in 2:01.28. She also swam the backstroke leg of the 200 medley relay, which finished second with a time of 1:39.44.
This season, Fuller is ranked eighth nationally in both the 100 back (52.79) and 200 IM (1:59.05) and is 13th in the 200 back (1:55.95). She leads the SEC in the 200 IM.
Tennessee then hits the road again to face SEC rival Florida on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. ET.
