Tabagismo e diabetes são fatores de risco para ter Ataque Isquêmico Transitório

Dr. Felipe Mourão, neurosurgeon, member of the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery and Prof. explains about AIT

Last Wednesday (07) the comedian Renato Aragão was hospitalized due to a TIA and in a note the actor’s advice said that the actor is well hospitalized for neurological monitoring.

We spoke to specialist neurosurgeon Dr Felipe Mourão to clarify doubts about this condition:

“Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) is an interruption of the blood supply to the brain tissue, and consequently interruption of the arrival of oxygen for the functioning of the brain. When this happens momentarily and with spontaneous recovery of blood flow to the affected brain region, we call it transient ischemia.

Spontaneous recovery of blood flow to the affected tissue does not mean that the case is less severe. In fact, it works as a body alarm. Considering that the risk of permanent interruption of blood circulation causing a stroke, with permanent consequences, is very high in these patients, especially in the first 48 hours after the TIA, said Prof. Felipe Mourao.

The symptoms are the same as those of a stroke, i.e. decreased strength on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, imbalance. The difference between the two is that in TIA the patient recovers from symptoms in approximately 1 hour after onset. In stroke, the symptom becomes permanent.

The risk factors for having a TIA are the same as the risk factors for a stroke. They are: high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, arrhythmia, heart failure.
