Tech Sweeps Georgia – Volleyball — Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

ATHENS, Ga. — Led by three players in double-digit kills, No. 7 Georgia Tech defeated archrival Georgia, 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-21), in the 2022 edition of volleyball’s Pure, Old-Fashioned Hate Saturday Night at Stegeman Coliseum.

Julia Bergmann (16 killed), Tamara Oten (11) and Bianca Bertolino (10) all recorded double-digit kills for Georgia Tech, which improved to 7-2 on the season with the win while handing Georgia (9-2) just its second loss of the season.

After a back-and-forth first set that saw 10 ties and three lead changes, Tech trailed just twice the rest of the night — at 0-2 and 2-3 in the third set. The Yellow Jackets recorded 47 kills and hit .275 as a team for the match, compared to 33 kills and a .158 hitting percentage for the Bulldogs.

How did it happen?

The first set remained tight throughout the early games as neither side was separated by more than three until Georgia took a 12-10 lead. Tech turned the tide from there, scoring five of the next six points to jump ahead, 15-13, at the first media break. The Jackets followed the same pattern shortly after, turning a one-point lead into a five-point lead, leading 22-17 after the rally. The white and gold would later win three of the final four points as Bertolino closed out the set for a 25-19 set win.

Georgia Tech continued to roll into the second set as an early four-point run put the Jackets ahead, 7-3. As the Yellow Jackets continued to press, two identical runs resulted in eight of the nine points the white and gold fashioned and an eight-point lead for the Jackets, 18-10. Tech would maintain its distance for the remainder of the second stanza as Bertolino finished off another set with her kill for a 25-17 triumph.

The third set was competitive in double figures as the two sides found themselves tied at 11. An ensuing three-point run, aided by a penalty awarded to the Bulldog staff, put the Jackets up 14. While White and the Gold scored further ahead, a final three-pointer put Tech up 21-17, proving to put the game away. Bertolino closed out the final set after she had the previous two at one stroke, this time sealing a 25-21 victory in three sets and a sweep of the match.
