The Tobago Carnival will be one of many firsts. It will be the first time the island will host its own fully independent Carnival, and it will be the first time TEMPO Networks launches its own Carnival costume anywhere in the world.
After several years of covering Caribbean-style Carnivals around the world, TEMPO Networks will be hitting the streets of Tobago in its own costume.
The entertainment network dedicated to Caribbean culture will make its Mas debut for Tobago’s inaugural Carnival from October 28 to 30.
“I’ve been thinking about TEMPO Mas hitting the road since the Network’s inception in 2005, but I wanted to wait for just the right time,” said TEMPO Networks Founder, Chairman and CEO, Frederick A. Morton, Jr.
“TEMPO and Mas is a natural fit and with TOBAGO’s first Carnival kicking off, that time has come,” he said. TEMPO will collaborate with Fog Angelz led by Morton’s old friend Tele Cruz and stylist Anya Elias. “Get ready for TEMPO Mas at carnivals across the region and internationally and for a brand new and exciting carnival experience that only TEMPO can provide!” Morton said excitedly.
TEMPO’s outfit is called Hot Ones, named after its hit show that features top talent and celebrities being interviewed while eating chicken wings topped with the Caribbean’s hottest hot sauces.
Tobagonian by birth, acclaimed costume designer Anya Elias has designed for 80 percent of carnivals worldwide and is excited to stamp her mark on the island’s first carnival.
The costume, she said, promotes the beauty of Tobago and is in line with TEMPO’s goal of showcasing the beauty of the Caribbean. The colors of the TEMPO logo and her unity rings are prominently displayed through the colorful feathers on the costume, which is mostly white with iridescent gems.
“My inspiration was our beaches, its cleanliness, its beauty and the glow when the sun hits the water. This was the inspiration for the white color and the materials we used. I had mirrors made in the shape of the Tempo logo with the colors that are inside the TEMPO logo,” she said. Elias said that she really wanted the costume to reflect the high standard of the TEMPO brand while still providing sex appeal.
“TEMPO is a brand that represents carnival and if we have a carnival and TEMPO is dancing for the first time for the first carnival in Tobago, then we are happy. Frederik and I have had a long friendship and we always get along well,” he said
Fog Angelz is a premium all inclusive J’ouvert and Mas Band, which won the 2017 award for Best J’ouvert Band in Trinidad and Tobago. This year, the theme of the J’ouvert and Mas group is “Freedom”.
The TEMPO Hot Ones suit is being sold at $2699 TTD with backpacks sold separately.
