A dynamic and inclusive cultural epicenter residing within the iconic King Power Mahanakhon, The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon officially marked the celebrated arrival of The Standard’s Asia flagship in the Thai capital.
Standard CEO Amber Asher said: “Tonight, as we celebrate the official grand opening of our Asia flagship, I am overwhelmed with pride and gratitude for our dedicated team, our talented associates, our amazing partners at King Power and for Sansiri. This beautiful hotel, which is located in the King Power Mahanakhon Building, a playground for international travelers to “Shop, Stay, Play, Eat”, has endured the biggest challenges throughout the pandemic, yet we persevered. We are very proud to bring our beloved Standard brand to Asia in a truly ‘Standard’ way. This stunning hotel exceeded our expectations in every way.”
At last night’s grand opening, the tradition of Standard Sounds was represented through performances ranging from rising local stars to international legends.
Thoughtfully created by The Standard’s legendary EVP of Nightlife and Entertainment, Stephane Vacher, the nightly musical programming unfolded across all hotel venues, including The Pool (transformed into a world-class stage), the lobby favorite and a pop-up nightclub. The diverse music line-up began with 90s hip hop at The Parlor, hosted by one of the most prominent players in the New York underground radio scene, Stretch Armstrong, and East Coast legend, a true party DJ, Rich Medina , setting the tone for the evening. In the pool, Onyx Collective, the new generation of modern Jazz, paid respect to the giants of classic jazz through their classical training, while infusing Hip Hop and R&B, resulting in a reinterpretation of Avant-Garde Jazz Fusion. Up front and right behind Onyx Collective was the very talented DJ duo, the muscle cars. Native New Yorkers Brandon Weems and Craigs Handfield rounded out the all-star talent, representing the best in music’s rising stars. Guests were treated to an iconic, pop-up performance by New York burlesque icon Dita Von Teese, who performed her unique style of burlesque in a martini glass on the terrace of The Grill Cafe. The night culminated with an epic performance from global electronic music sensation Diplo, who set the dance floor on fire.
The guest list, a glamorous representation of the global Standard family, included Lewis Tan, Douglas Little, Jodi O’Keefe, Fiona Xie, Voramas Srivaddhanaprabha, Ravi Itiravivong, Prom and Chollada Sirisant, Paulie Sirisant, Kanachai Bencharongkul, Prinyalo Ruenchanpan, , Metinee Kingpayome, Cindy Bishop, Rusameekae Fagerlund, Nattasha Bunprachom, Chalida Wijitvongtong, Jarinporn Joonkiat, Prinya Intachai, Nana Raibena and more.
In true Standard style, revelers from around the world mixed, mingled and danced as the carefully designed journey led them through The Standard’s wonderfully unique spaces, where a curation of musical performances acted as a vehicle to promote organic exploration. The immersive journey of nighttime experiences saw The Plaza, The Parlor, The Standard Grill and the neon-lit pool transformed into microcosmic worlds of musical genres, while the third-floor event space became – for one night only – more exclusive. night club in the city.
In the living room, as the signature cocktails, private beers and champagne flowed, the playlist curated by The Standard gave way to really cool tunes courtesy of a guest DJ from New York City, with the sound levels gradually increasing to bring the crowd of jumping closer to the release of the sound. In contrast, the monochromatic tea room excite remained static to pique guests’ interest with an art installation focused on Retrofuturism, taking the venue’s already glamorous decor to the next level.
Meanwhile, a cocktail set up in Standard grill dining room and terrace revelers enjoy gourmet creations from The Grill team paired with premium champagne and signature mixology. As lively conversation was set against a backdrop of soft soul performed by local vocalists, the restaurant buzzed with an eccentric crowd dressed to the nines.
To make the most of Bangkok’s mild weather, swimming pool laid out an alfresco spread of thirst-quenching cocktails served from the fancy pool bar alongside a legalized CBD offering. Atmospheric pool lighting formed a magnetic yet serene backdrop for live contemporary jazz performances by Onyx Collective, who fused hip hop, R&B, rap, Afrobeat and Latin beats while celebrating the genre’s roots.
As the night wore on, the party moved to Club – a late-night room featuring live sets from DJ Alex from Tokyo and legendary American DJ and producer Diplo. With an industry-leading sound system, purpose-built dance floor and LED lighting system to rival Bangkok’s finest nightclubs, The Club pulled out all the stops to show Bangkok that as does The Standard.
