MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After the West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams had a convincing victory at the 11th annual WV State Games, a trio of Mountaineers have earned Big 12 honors, the league announced Wednesday .
Senior Jacqueline McCutchan was announced as the Junior Female Swimmer of the Week William Mullen was named the Male and Freshman Swimmer of the Week Mia Cheatwood was announced as the female newcomer of the week. All three Highlanders earned all-conference honors for the first time in their careers.
McCutchan led the way for the women’s team by collecting six wins at the State Games, including three relay wins and three individual wins. The Morgantown, West Virginia native took first in the women’s 100-yard dash (56.37), 100 freestyle (51.39) and 200 individual medley (2:07.79). McCutchan’s trio of relay wins came in the 200 and 400 medley relays and the 400 free relay.
Mullen secured a pair of first-place finishes and a second-place finish at the two-day meet. The Fairfax Station, Virginia, native won the men’s 1,000 free (9:26.45) and the men’s 500 free (4:35.39), while taking second in the men’s 200 butterfly (1:53.01).
Of note, Mullen set a new program record in the men’s 1,650 free at the 2022 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships with a time of 15:21.57, good for a fourth-place finish.
For Cheatwood, she led the freshmen as she posted four first-place finishes, one second-place finish and one third-place finish. The Bowling Green, Ohio, native’s four wins included a pair of individual wins and two relays. Cheatwood touched the pads first in the women’s 100 breast (1:03.51) and 200 breast (2:19.20) and helped the women’s 200 and 400 medley relays to first-place finishes.
Additionally, the freshman followed McCutchan in the women’s 100 free, placing second (52.19), while finishing third in the women’s 50 free (24.08).
This marks the first time three climbers have won weekly honors since February 2021.
The WVU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action for the first dual meet of the season as the teams host Cincinnati on Oct. 21-22 at the Mylan Park Aquatic Center.
