Tobago expecting 42 vessels as cruise season begins

Approximately 64,000 passengers are expected to call at the ports in Scarborough and Charlotteville during the cruise season, which runs from November 2022 to April 2023.

This was revealed by the island’s Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transport Division in a media release on Monday.

According to the Division, Scarborough Harbor was transformed into a hub of cultural activity on Sunday (November 20) as passengers disembarking from the Silver Moon (the first ship to arrive) were warmly greeted by local entertainers, various cultural performers, artisans. and other stakeholders of the tourism industry.

“This was the ship’s maiden voyage to Destination Tobago and her arrival with 1,040 passengers and crew signaled the official start of the island’s 2022-2023 cruise ship season.”

According to the announcement, the Secretary of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transport, Councilor Tashia Burris, together with other representatives of the Division and the Tobago Tourism Agency Limited (TTAL) were on hand to mark the occasion.

“Burris expressed how pleased she was that the island’s borders were finally fully opened to international visitors, with the first arrivals via the Silver Moon.”

“The road to a full reopening has been long and difficult, but we are excited to once again be able to welcome our returning and first-time cruise visitors to the largest small island on the planet.”

The division will also continue to aggressively market the island and improve attractions and product offerings.

“Burris added that the Division also has plans to pursue a cruise shipping business so that it can become one of the premier cruise destinations in the Caribbean.”

“Now is the time for us to realize all the opportunities available to grow this sector into one that can bring strong and sustainable returns to our local economy. The cruise ship industry is vital to our goal of welcoming 100,000 visitors internationals on our shores.”

A total of 42 ships are expected to visit the island.
