The Tobago Marlins will play a Trinidadian National League side in a three-match series starting on Friday at the Shaw Park Cricket Ground.
The matches are designed to give Tobago cricketers an opportunity to impress the national selectors, against premium players from the completed TTCB National League.
The series concludes with a 50-over match on Friday at 9.30am, followed by the T20 match on Saturday from 2pm and a 40-over encounter on Sunday at 10am. John Pollard was chosen as coach and Marcus Daniel as manager.
Kerwin John, president of the Tobago Cricket Association, told Newsday that he is satisfied with the efforts of his executive to continue the development of cricket despite the Covid19 pandemic.
The latest initiative, which is free to the public, is a collaboration between the TCA and the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board, (TTCB).
According to John, there is still a lot of cricket to be played this season.
He said, “Tobago’s eight cricket clubs will compete in a T10 competition from July 13-19, at the Cyd Gray Sports Complex in Roxborough, and the Tobago under-23 players will engage the Aranguez Cricket Academy of Trinidad, from July 20-25. , in Tobago.
Reflecting on the season so far, John said: “It’s been fantastic, given what we’ve achieved in a short space of time. We were able to start the season with the Chief Secretary T10 Blast, followed by the 40 overs and T20 competitions.”
Scarborough/Mason Hall Cricket Club, won the 40 over and T20 tournaments, beating Canaan/Bon Accord United on both occasions.
John also highlighted the recent achievements of former West Indies Under-19 player Joshua James.
The Whim player was named in the inaugural 15-man shortlist, selected by Cricket West Indies, for the Developing Players Academy, in Antigua, for high-performance training and development sessions.
“It’s a big boost for Tobago cricket.
“He is the first cricketer in Tobago to achieve this goal and is a motivation for young players coming from different age groups.”
