Tobago: The 2022/23 cruise season has officially begun in Tobago with the arrival of Silversea Cruises’ ship, Silver Moon, in Port Scarborough with 1,040 passengers on 20 November 2022.
Scarborough Harbor was transformed into a hub of cultural activity yesterday as passengers disembarking from the Silver Moon were warmly welcomed by local entertainers, various cultural performers, artisans and other tourism industry players.
This was the ship’s maiden voyage to Destination Tobago and her arrival with 1,040 passengers and crew signaled the official start of the island’s 2022-2023 cruise season.
The Secretary for Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transport, Councilor Tashia Burris, along with other representatives of the Division and Tobago Tourism Agency Limited (TTAL), were on hand to mark the occasion.
As the Tobago Performing Arts Company and drummers from the Department of Culture welcomed visitors with a cultural display, Secretary Burris expressed how happy she was that the island’s borders were finally fully opened to international visitors, with the first arrivals via the Silver Moon .
“The road to a full reopening has been long and difficult, but we are excited to once again be able to welcome our returning and first-time cruise visitors to the largest small island on the planet.
“Now is the time for us to realize all the opportunities available to grow this sector into one that can bring strong and sustainable returns to our local economy. The cruise ship industry is vital to our goal of welcoming 100,000 international visitors to our shores. We will continue to aggressively market our island, improve our attractions and product offerings, and pursue the cruise shipping business so that Tobago becomes one of the premier cruise destinations in the Caribbean,” said Secretary Burris.
The Secretary also congratulated the stakeholders who have undertaken outstanding work to ensure that all systems are in place for a very successful season. These include the Port Authority, TTAL, DoTCAT, land transport associations, Port Health and the Health, Customs and Immigration Division, Tour Operators Associations and Carvalho Cruise Agents Agencies.
