Tobago’s tourism sector workers have a role to play in the island’s development, THA Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transport Secretary Tashia Burris said on Wednesday.
“We have to build the island together,” Burris told more than 100 tourism workers at a town hall meeting at Scarborough Library. During the meeting, there were calls for greater efficiency in customer service delivery, additional craft market spaces at the island’s ports of entry, the inclusion of a tourism-based curriculum at the primary school level, greater recognition, accessibility and inclusion of music education. in tourism; more youth-based tourism opportunities; Improvements to the Store Bay Beach facility; and further developments in agritourism.
Responding to the issue on customer service, Tobago Tourism Agency (TTAL) CEO Louis Lewis said the training will be conducted to improve service in several sectors.
Burris said there were plans to extend the division’s Summer Youth Awareness Program and Youth Tourism Clubs initiative.
She said discussions were underway with the Education, Research and Technology Division to formalize tourism education.
She assured workers and industry representatives that their concerns and proposed solutions have been taken into consideration and, as such, all efforts will be made for a timely policy.
Delving into some of the significant development improvements to come, she said, “Working towards the betterment of the island. We must rebuild the island together. We should be our island’s biggest fans. It’s up to each of us as we work to become the greatest small island on the planet.”
