History of Trinidad and Tobago Independence Day:
The island was first discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1498 during his expedition to the New World. While sailing in shallow waters he spotted the island of Trinidad. He first saw three peaks of the Trinity Hills and named the island Trinidad. And later he also discovered the island of Tobago.
By 1777, Spanish rulers were looking to begin populating these islands as part of the Spanish conquest of America. Therefore, they established tax exemptions for those who were willing to stay on the islands for the first ten years.
However, the efforts largely failed and by 1797 the British occupied the islands without much resistance. And the British realized that the islands were very good for plantations and so they brought many slaves from Africa to this island. After the slavery of Africans was abolished all over the world, so the British brought many Indian migrant workers.
And as a result, these two large ethnic groups became dominant in these islands over time and influenced the culture and traditions of the island nation. And finally it gained independence from British rule in 1962 and despite this Queen Elizabeth II still remains as head of state for Trinidad and Tobago as the only figurehead.
Significance of Trinidad and Tobago:
As stated earlier that Trinidad and Tobago is a very diverse country both in race and faith. And it is relatively a very new country settled by mostly immigrants only a few centuries ago. But this tiny island has a dark history of slavery and forced labor. So, on this Independence Day, the people of Trinidad and Tobago also recognize the history of the island and pay tribute to all their ancestors who suffered greatly.
This day also gives a message to all the people of Trinidad and Tobago about a hopeful future for the country. Although it is a very new country, the people who inhabit it today came from very different historical backgrounds and now they have found themselves working together for the betterment of their country.
And like other Independence days around the world, this day also celebrates the value of freedom and equality that everyone should be free in this world. So it is a very big moment and pride for the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago to move forward with this message of peace, love and coexistence.
The freedom struggle in Trinidad and Tobago also portrays the message of peace and love, as their struggle for freedom against British rule was largely non-violent. And this represents the will and determination for freedom from the people of Trinidad and Tobago as well.
