Minister of Foreign Affairs and Caricom Dr Amery Browne and Venezuelan Ambassador Alvaro Sanchez Cordero on Wednesday commemorated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Browne and Cordero met at the minister’s Prada Street, St Clair office.

The minister said it was a special date because of the importance of relations between the two countries, which are separated by only seven nautical miles.

“We are linked by culture, history and geography. We have a great bond in national security, economic and technical cooperation,” Brown said.

Showing off his Spanish-speaking skills, Browne said: “Felicidades. Muchisimas gracias (congratulations and thank you very much).”

Cordero expressed his gratitude to Browne for the event which he said celebrated the brotherhood between the two countries.

“It was a relationship of friendship, neighborliness, cooperation and understanding. It is a relationship that started only two weeks after the independence of TT”, he said.

Cordero said it is strategically important that good diplomatic relations between the two countries continue. He also sent greetings from the government of Nicolás Maduro to the government and people of this country.

Browne and Cordero exchanged letters of congratulations between the two governments. They then toasted and ate iced cakes in the national colors of both countries – Cordero ate cake decorated in TT’s colors while Browne ate cake in Venezuela’s colors.

Also present were the ambassador’s wife, Monica Rey, and the staff of the embassy and the ministry.
