T&T trio in Windies Test squad for Australia

Trinidad and Tobago trio of Joshua Da Silva, Anderson Phillip and Jadon Seales have been selected in the West Indies squad for a two-Test tour of Australia in November-December.

Da Silva, 24, made his debut in December 2020 and has averaged 30.45 in his 16 Tests since then with one century and three half-centuries.

Seales, 21, has had a promising start to his Test career with 36 wickets in nine matches since making his debut against South Africa in June 2021.

Phillip, 26, made his debut against Bangladesh in the 2nd Test at Gros Islet where he took 2 for 53 in the match.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of West Indies legend Shivnarine, has been called up for the first time after scoring 439 runs at an average of 73.16 in the 2022 West Indies Championship.

“We have a newcomer to the team in Tagenarine Chanderpaul. He came in very well in the four-dayers of the West Indies Championship and also did a very good job at the top of the order against Bangladesh A in Saint Lucia this summer. He has what it takes to do well at the highest level.” said Chief Selector Desmond Haynes.

The selectors have also handed in recalls for Shamarh Brooks and Roston Chase.

“Roston Chase has returned to the squad as an all-rounder and we believe his experience and skills will come in handy and Shamarh Brooks has also returned to strengthen the batting middle order,” added the former West Indies opener.

However, John Campbell is out of the squad after being banned for four years for an anti-doping rule violation.

Rahkeem Cornwell and orthodox left-armer Gudakesh Motie have also been dropped from the team.

West Indies have won Test series at home against England and Bangladesh and Haynes expects them to do well against Australia.

“We have a core group of players who have been part of the Test squad and have performed well. We have played two series this year – against England and Bangladesh – and won both. We have been playing good Test cricket and expect to do well against the Australians on their home turf,” said Haynes.

Phil Simmons will coach the West Indies in the tour of Australia, his last assignment with the regional team.

He announced his resignation from the position after the West Indies failed to make it to the main draw of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

The West Indies will gather in Australia on November 10 and play two warm-up matches before the first Test.

The first Test takes place in Perth from November 30 to December 4, with the second Test in Adelaide from December 8-12.

West Indies have lost 12 of their 14 Test matches in Australia since their last win in February 1997.
