Captain Shalini Samaroo scored 61 runs and grabbed four wickets without conceding a run to lead Trinidad and Tobago Women’s U-19s to an emphatic 137-run win over their Leeward Islands counterparts in the first round of the West Indies Cricket Promotion for women under 19 years old. Stars T20 Championship, at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, yesterday.
Batting first, T&T posted a defended 164 for two from their 20 overs, with Samaroo opening the batting and scoring the ball for her side before running out. She hit 12 fours during her 49-ball knock.
T&T’s other opener, Shunelle Sawh, continued to pile on the runs, finishing unbeaten on 53 (from 56 balls), hitting six fours – including one off the last ball of the innings to reach a half-century and ensure that hosts to post a winning total. All-rounder Djenaba Joseph also chipped in with 21 with the bat.
In reply, the Leewards innings folded smoothly with all the T&T bowlers having success. But it was Samaroo who put the icing on the cake to end the match early.
In other matches yesterday, Guyana defeated Barbados by nine wickets at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex, while the USA defeated Jamaica in the first match at Tarouba.
The tour continues today with T&T vs Barbados in Tarouba from 2.30pm. Meanwhile, the Leewards take on Guyana at the same venue from 10am and the Windwards take on the USA at Diego Martin from 9.30am.
