Twenty-nine local cricket coaches, levels one and two, from seven areas across Trinidad and Tobago will attend a two-day workshop at the Sir Frank Worrell Development Center in Balmain, Couva, on Saturday and Sunday.

The workshop is being organized by the TT Cricket Board (TTCB) and will be conducted by Chief Cricket Coaches Bhoodish Dookie and Debideen Manik; a former local government adviser for Felicity/Endeavour.

A statement released by the cricket board said the two coaches envision a paradigm shift in the way youngsters are taught the game.

Manick said that while the fundamentals of the game remain the same, Level I and II coaches will be required to adopt methodologies and concepts to hone their craft and increase the competitiveness of their fees.

“The focus will be on technique, preparation, development of intensity and strategies. It’s a way that the cricket board in India and other sports powerhouses have adopted to great effect,” Manick said.

He added that the TTCB had rightly identified the need to review how things are done to improve coaching methods, which has a direct link to improving the standard of the game.

“TTCB’s timely intervention will address the challenges regional cricketers face against their traditional rivals and less developed cricketing nations who are now making a big impact on the world stage,” Manick said.

The statement added that Manick “played a major role in coaching Clico Preysal Sports Club into the top local cricket team and has remained committed to youth development over the years.”

TTCB president Azim Bassarath believes it is important for local coaches to update their skill bank and the idea of such a workshop came from meetings with chairmen and secretaries of zonal councils and coaches involved in youth cricket.

“The zonal boards were asked to nominate the coaches who meet the eligibility criteria to attend the workshop, which we are sure will benefit cricket at all levels,” said Bassarath.

Manick said the program will include theoretical, practical and philosophical aspects of the game.

He said he has worked with fellow reliever Dookie in the past and will rely on his store of knowledge and experience.
