Twitter and AFP announce collaboration to elevate credible information in Spanish

Press release | Twitter and AFP

AFP, one of the world’s leading news agencies, and Twitter announced Thursday a collaboration to identify and highlight reliable information in Spanish on the platform, just weeks after announcing a similar deal for Portuguese content in Brazil.

Through this new collaboration, AFP will support Spanish content on Twitter in Latin America, Spain and the US

“We are pleased to deepen our relationship with Twitter as part of AFP’s global efforts to address misinformation and promote fact-based journalism,” said Phil Chetwynd, AFP’s global news director.

AFP’s digital investigation team in Latin America and Spain consists of more than 30 fact checkers who work to tackle misleading information online.

“The fight against misleading information on the Internet can only be effective if we join forces. In this sense, AFP’s collaboration with Twitter to contextualize Spanish content seems particularly appropriate to allow carefully verified information to be highlighted,” said Grégoire Lemarchand, AFP’s editor-in-chief for digital investigation.

Currently, The Twitter Curation Team provides context to help people make informed decisions about what they see on Twitter. When large or fast-growing conversations occur on Twitter that may be relevant, controversial, sensitive, or contain potentially misleading information, the Twitter Curation team sources and pulls relevant context from trusted sources. .

“With hundreds of millions of Tweets shared every day, the Twitter Curation team is committed to highlighting and contextualizing the wide range of events and stories unfolding on Twitter. We are excited to partner with AFP to ensure that reliable information is available in real-time about key conversations as they appear on Twitter,” said Leandro Mota, senior head of curation for Twitter Latin America.

Through this new collaboration, the AFP Factual team will help the Twitter Curation team scale and increase the speed of its efforts to provide timely and authoritative context to conversations happening on Twitter. AFP will not be involved in Twitter’s enforcement decisions.
